Straight Street Orlando

Feeding the homeless and using the word of God to inspire and invoke life-changes

By Tiffany Butts December 3, 2013
Straight Street Orlando is a non-profit organization that helps to feed the homeless in Orlando.
They host a food share every Sunday and Tuesday in the parking lot of the St George Greek Orthodox Church.

They are always in need of an extra pair of helping hands to bring and serve food or just to be there with a friendly smile and open heart.

My family and I had the pleasure of helping them out on Sunday. We involved the kids in every aspect. We went to the store together to purchase the supplies needed, they helped us prepare the trays of food and came with us downtown to serve. I was pleasantly surprised by how many families were their along side us serving our community. It was an extremely organized and well run program. It touched the hearts of all of us and was a really great lesson for every one of us to be thankful for what we have and to share with those less fortunate.
My oldest son, who is 9 years old, surprised me the most. After we were done preparing the food he said, "wow, I cant believe how much food we made for only $28.00. That's what we spend when we go to McDonalds" and when we got in the car to go home he said "Even though it's kind of sad what we saw, it really feels good to do the right thing". Now that was one invaluable lesson learned by being "hands on" in our community.

If you and your family would like to volunteer with this wonderful organization and help feed the homeless please visit their facebook page by clicking here. Please like their page to stay up to date on what is going on and to be informed of the needs of our community.
Their facebook page has an event created for each food share.  If food is needed to be made it will be posted in the event details along with the recipes and or other items they need to be provided.

On Sunday nights the the food share is hosted by the knight volunteers of UCF and begins at 6pm with volunteers arriving at 5:45.
Tuesday night's food share begins at 7pm, with volunteers arriving around 6:30pm. They will have a devotion and quick session for new volunteers to go over protocol.
